The American Red Cross Blood Drive held on August 24th in the gym of the Family Foundation School. Put together by student government and Joe Rogalavich, the blood drive turned out to be a great success. The drive was held from 1pm-7pm and enjoyed a constant flow of donors and volunteers. Initial concerns about the level of participation were eclipsed when the event turned out 70 total blood donations, including many that volunteered to donate the much needed double red cells.
For most of the students and many of the staff, this was their first time giving blood. Many were nervous. Several took this as an opportunity to do 12-step work, sitting with the donors as they gave blood, helping to distract them from the needle, and taking away the fear and anxiety many have when giving blood. The donors themselves were also motivated by this 12-step aspect of giving to someone who is hurt or in need of help, help that much of the time, can save a persons life. The donors also received the added bonus of the treats provided after giving blood and the coupon for a free carton of Friendly’s Ice Cream.
