Color Wars

dsc_0317To kick off our new semester, students and staff participated in two days of activity surrounding the renaming of our families to houses.  Each of our six houses is now named for a hero of recovery.  Betton House is named for our founders Betty and Tony Argiros; Lake House for Handsome Lake; Mann House for Marty Mann; Wilson House for Bill Wilson; Smith House for Dr. Bob Smith; and Talbot House for Matt Talbot.

Modeled on the “color wars” of the local summer camps, each residential group at the school was given the opportunity to work together and develop the new identity for their house.  This included researching the biography of respective hero, choosing new house colors and a mascot.

Wearing colored bandannas and face paint, students competed in basketball, art, frisbee, academics, volleyball, fishing, horseshoes, and debate.   Along with these activities each house also earned points for cleanliness, enthusiasm, helping others, good sportsmanship, and a final group presentation about each recovery hero.  Prompted to compete for the various prizes offered to the winning teams, each house pulled together with a great sense of unity.

Mike Argiros, President of the Family Foundation School,  commented “I’m very impressed with the ease with which the students jumped in and connected with these changes.  It was demonstrated throughout the two days with their overall enthusiasm and high level of participation.”
